Mamanuca Environment Society in Fiji Islands

The Mamanuca Environment Society (MES), a nonprofit and non-government organisation, was formed in 2002 by the Mamanuca Fiji Islands Hotel and Tourism Association (MFIHTA) members with a recommendation from the Coral Cay Conservation (CCC). The main objective of the Society is to promote environmental awareness and protection that supports sustainable tourism and community livelihood in the Mamanuca group.

The major projects the MES is involved in are: school environmental awareness programs; community awareness projects; water quality analysis projects; turtle conservation; waste management projects; and reef protection programs.

The core projects of the Society to date concerned marine conservation. Future plans, however, are to include land resource conservation programmes. The MES has worked losely with the Ministry of Tourism and Transport and the CCC since its establishment and seeks to do so in the future. As the Society has a relatively small number of members and sponsors, one of the future challenges is to incorporate all stakeholders' interest and encourage sponsorship. The lack of full-time human resources working for the Society also discourages efficient project management. Nevertheless, the success of the MES initiatives has had a positive influence towards sustainable tourism in the beautiful Mamanuca island group in Fiji.

MES has a key role in developing support for and understanding the conservation management needs of the natural and cultural landscape of the Mamanucas that is the foundation of that area's tourism industry.
